A Saturday Night Sumting – Ear & Drum Session 37

First the first time in 3 years (since my son was born) I was left alone on a Saturday night to just get my head down and mix for mixing sake. There are no themes or tricks to this mix, it’s just what I felt like playing at the time. I pull out some new stuff, some old stuff and some down right dirty stuff.

This is the sound of me letting lose on a Saturday night.

Dogs On Acid Jungle Competition Mix

I had the great honour recently of being asked to do a mix for DOA of jungle tunes contributed by members from the Grid section of the site. The Grid is where the producers hang out and I wasn’t sure what to expect really. But I gottah say the quality of the tunes and the nailing of the 94-95 jungle sound was spot on. There were a few exceptions that I wouldn’t personally call jungle, but they were still great tracks and went into this mix.

So if you are a jungle fan and want a mix of never before heard tracks all written in 2010 then this one should fit the bill nicely. A big thanks to Ben Kei and Drumbeat Agenda for getting me involved and all the producers for being so generous with their production output.

Basic Operations – The Lost Tapes

Basic Operations (Atlantic Connection & Kevin Focus) went their separate ways in 2005 leaving a legacy of awesome music. But even better they left a swag of unreleased tunes which they are now putting out under their ‘Lost Tapes’ series. Classics like Drifting on an Aspect (VIP), Keep on Dreaming, New Dawn and Since I’ve Seen You which Bukem caned on dub for years.

You can get a listen and buy it exclusively from bandcamp.com. And to top it all off Basic Ops are also slated to be going back into the studio again to work on some new releases which I am hoping will hit sooner rather than later.

Vegetative – Ear & Drum Session 33

Say what you like about the minimal trend in Drum & Bass it looks like it is here to stay. It might not ignite the dance floors but it is sweet on the ears and awesome to veg out to. This is a mix of the latest minimal tracks that are doing it for me.

Sunchase dominates with his new album Static Nitro, but s13 also puts in a good appearance with his Yourself EP. See else where on the blog for a free download of this killer EP from a fresh name. Lenzman, Rockwell and S.P.Y. get honourable mentions for always coming correct with their minimal sound.

You may notice there is a track not listed. For the life of me I can’t find it and if anyone out there knows what it is I’d be mightily pleased if you tell me what it is. Cheers.

Mercurial – Ear & Drum Session 32

This year has been a good year for big vocal numbers with a smashing beat behind them. Hospital as always are leading the charge, but labels like Horizons, Esprit, Spearhead and Fokuz are also putting out some amazing dance floor drum & bass. Netsky is on fire right now and artists like S.P.Y., Lenzman and Bachelors of Science keep consistently banging out great vocal D&B.

Some people have been calling this sound ‘commercialised’, but to be honest I don’t hear it. It might be accessible and something your girlfriend might drag you onto the dance floor to jump around to. But when has that ever been a bad thing?

Producer Profile: S13

You gottah love D&B for throwing artists your way that you haven’t even heard of, but blow you away with the quality of their music. One such artist is S13, who’s free Yourself EP features four solid tracks that are all well worth listening too and, even better, mixing. The highlight for me is a track called Earth Ulro, which is totally inspired and inspiring.

If I can dig up any info on S13 I’ll add it here, but for now he is a mystery to me. So I’ll just have to copy and paste the press release that came with the EP.

Once two different stories began. As the result we give you the best quality electronic music for free. S13 has been a big secret but now it’s time to tell you the truth.

Nestle down and don’t talk. Hear the cold and depth of his thoughts. Feel the sand and gaze of his mysterious eyes. Discover his weird Earth Ulro.

The Nothing – Ear & Drum Session 30

Remember The Nothing from the Never Ending Story? A huge black mass of clouds that swept across the land and cleared all before it. Well this mix reminded me of this. I’m not normally a hard D&B kind of guy, but I do enjoy mixing the heavier stuff every now and then. Lately as a genre it has been on the improve, producers are dropping the over the top scull stepping for a more junglistic vibe and melody seems to be creeping back into the heavier beats.

News – The Ear & Drum: Now with pictures you can see with your eyes!

My chilli plant.

Plant pattern.

My boy having a deep moment.

Any regular downloader of my mixes would be pretty used to seeing the image of a cool android girl with headphones on that I mark my MP3s with. But what does that image really say about me? What insight into my life does this cold woman represent?

Absolutely none, that’s what. :D

So just to spice things up a bit, and to give you a look at the world through my eyes I thought it would be cool to start attaching photos I’ve taken onto my mixes. That way every mix will look different, and give you a different little peek into my life.

If you hate them and want the sexy android back then post in here and I’ll consinder it. ;)

Producer Profile: ICR

Hungarian D&B artist Zoltan Gal, also known as ICR, has been a key figure in the country’s thriving D&B scene. In 1999 he established it’s online magazine and community site, ImpulseCreator.hu and has releases on dozens of diverse labels worldwide such as Offshore, Covert Operations , Good Looking, Nerve, Fokuz, Counter Intelligence, Flatline Audio, X-Tinction Agenda, Red Mist, Vibez and Influence.

In 2007, he started own label, Misspent Music, which continues to release high quality liquid and esoteric D&B. ICR has been integral in shaping the exceptional Hungarian D&B scene, and he continues to blaze a trail gloabally by releasing his latest album Restored as a free download. Not only is this incredibly generous, but I also think this will be the way of things in the future for music in general.

As a true D&B pioneer, ICR we salute you.
