Ear & Drum Session 156: Beautiful Music Pt.2

My second mix sourcing from the ‘Is this the most beautiful D&B tune ever?’ thread on DOA features some amazingly soulful D&B tunes from the year 2000 onward. It’s been amazing fun having a bunch of like minded people program a mix for me as a lot of these tunes I have never put into a mix.

The production roster reads like a who’s who of D&B featuring legendary artists such as Omni Trio, Marcus Intalex (RIP), Klute, Calibre plus Alaska & Seba just to mention a few. Some of these tracks never made it to digital, so I had to dig deep into my vinyl collection to complete the track list.

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did mixing this special dedication to the beauty that is D&B music.

Ear & Drum Session 154: Pour One Out

In 2001 I heard a Marcus Intalex and ST Files remix of 4 Hero’s – 9 By 9 and it pretty much changed my life. I’d always liked the Liquid D&B sound, but this was the track that made fall head over heals in love with it. Melodic with a great vocal, but with a tough beat and chugging bassline that just got under your skin. Judging by the reaction every time I played this track, I wasn’t the only one who felt it.

The sudden and unexpected death of Marcus Intalex in 2018 shocked everybody in the scene. Marcus was one of the greats with an enviable back catalogue of fantastic music, but more than that he was just a really great guy. Always encouraging to new producers and with a keen ear for fresh talent his Soul:R and Revolve:R labels were and still are some of D&B finest.

It’s taken me a long time to get around to this mix as so many other DJs who knew Marcus better than I were all dropping sets dedicated to him I felt like there wasn’t much more I could add. Instead of an all Intalex set (of which there are many), I figured I’d play tunes that I was either introduced to through Marcus or that just reminded me of his style. I also decided to focus on the early 2000s as this was when I was hearing him play out the most and what I remember as Marcus Intalex at his absolute finest.

To Mr Marcus Intalex. You were a top producer, a top DJ and most of all a top bloke. I hope you are somewhere brocking out and having a fine old time.

Deadly Deep Dubs – Ear & Drum Session 153

The deeper side of D&B has been on fire this year with big LPs and EPs dropping left, right and centre. And it’s looking like it isn’t going to slow down anytime soon with artists like Bop, Oliver Yorke, Alix Perez, Bungle and Kid Drama all dropping quality releases over the past few months.

A special shout out to Sunchase’s return to D&B with a the very deep and catchy Slap. And to Halogenix and Bungle for their VIP mixes of Blej and Cocooned. Both tunes being some of the most heavily played tracks of the year and deftly reworked to keep the original vibe while adding something new.

This will be my final mix for the year except for a special treat closer towards Christmas. Keep you ear to the underground for that.

Breaking Bad – Ear & Drum Session 149

The harder side of D&B has taken an interesting turn lately with lots of artists looking back to move forward. Producers such as Blocks & Escher, Forrest Drive West and Bladerunner are all using sounds from back in the day and putting an fresh twist on them with modern day production techniques. Needless to say this is great news for older headz such as myself.

Deep, dark and dirty a lot of the tunes in this mix feature this new take on old styles with deadly impact. If you are a fan the original Metalheadz sound this will definitely appeal.

Get a little Liquid into your life this weekend with a mix of new tunes from across the globe.

Plus new tunes from Atlantic Connection, 1991 & Matt Wilson and the recently departed Marcus Intalex. You may have left us, but your music lives on.

The Ear & Drum recognised in the Top 40 D&B Blogs

This year marks the 10th anniversary for the Ear & Drum so it was a very nice surprise to receive an email recently from feedspot.com informing me that the blog made it to #29 in their Top 40 D&B Blogs.

Most of you know I run this blog solo and simply do it for the love of the music, but it is always nice to get a little recognition. 🙂 They even gave me a wee virtual medal. 😛

Thanks to everyone for their support down the years and here’s to the next 10 years.

Internal Eyes – Ear & Drum Session 140

2017 was a great year for Liquid & D&B in general. Liquid D&B seemed to split out into different sub-genres with there being a distinct harder, ravier (is that even a word?) and a far more relaxed sound. This mix focuses on the more chilled out end of the spectrum.

Keep an ear out for Chimpo’s sing-a-long ode to a by-gone era 1996, the mighty Seba who pops up in various different collaborations including with German ambient legend Ulrich Schnauss on the hilariously titled Snöflingor plas an extra big shout to Mitekiss who features heavily on here and who really came into his own in 2017.

Welcome to 2018 and here’s hoping it is your year.

Get up, get down and enjoy.

She Said – Ear & Drum Session 135

You know Liquid D&B has made it’s mark when Goldie starts releasing gorgeous melodic vocal driven tunes like I Adore You. There are so many beautiful tracks in this mix it hurts, helped in no small part by the release of new LPs by Mr Goldie and Irish liquid legend Calibre. There is also a very healthy supporting cast in the form Hybrid Minds, Artificial Intelligence and my new favourite Dawn Wall.

Not much else to say but enjoy this mix of lush liquid tunes. 🙂
