Breaking out the 140bpm tempo this time around with a dirty dub heavy Down Low session. There are a few other styles in here as well, but the focus is firmly on the head nod of Dub influenced electronic music and Dubstep.

As always I’m looking to push D&B producers doing slower bits in these mixes so shouts out to Rainforest, Fox and Anz, Calibre, Synkro, Biome and Seathasky for all exploring outside of the 170bpm category.

And an extra special shout out to MC Duh for providing me with a copy of the DJG remix of The Specials – Ghost Town. Terry Hall passed away last year, and his influence on me and music in the 80s cannot be understated. Ghost Town was THE anti-anthem of Thatcher era Britain and it sound like nothing else I’d ever heard when it originally came out. This one’s for you Terry.

Back to the lower BPMs for a hot minute with a selection of Garage, House and Bass tunes. Don’t ask me for the micro-genres because it is all broken beats to me. Like most of my Down Low mixes, I like to still keep a solid ear on D&B artists doing interesting things at different BPMs.

Some highlights for me are GLXY’s – The LP Track, which is Garage at its catchiest from a guy who normally rolls out D&B. Nelver, another D&B wizard shows off his 130bpm chops with Show You and Wait for Me with BORKA FM. Moby proves he still has it with his track Rufuge and make sure you keep an ear out for the spine tingling sample lifted off Ed Rush, Optical & Fierce’s classic Locust / Cutslo in Kastle’s Garage 2 stepper 4 Real.

Back on the 130bpm tip again, this Down Low focuses mainly on techno, breaks and garage beats with a darkish vibe. Kicking things off is the bleak Octurnal by Imogen & Ben Pest. This sets the tone for the first half until the jungle vibes of Dusky – Yoohoo (Benton Remix) and Dizzee Rascal’s return to form – You Don’t Know (Radio Edit) lighten the mood.

Keep an ear out for the closer, Vapourspace’s seminal trance rave classic Gravitational Arch of 10. It took me 20 years to track down this tune and I will never get tired of rolling it out.

When D&B producers put their mind to slower tempos they often leave other producers who eat, sleep and breath those tempos in the dust. This time we give the Down Low treatment to 140bpm. While there are some non-D&B producers sprinkled throughout, Sunchase, Amit, Bop, Shy FX, Dub Phizix, Resound, Calibre, Nelver, Seathasky and Om Unit all have their roots firmly planted in the 170bmp world of D&B.

Covering off Ambient, House, Techno, Breaks, Bass, Dance Hall and Electronica this set is the definition of eclectic. Special shout to Shy FX for his tune Carnival Culture which Ive been trying to slide into a set for the longest time. Looks like I finally got there.

The Down Low: Session 047

It’s been a while since I’ve dropped a Down Low and this one is an eclectic mix of house, techno, breaks and even a trance classic in the form of Vapour Space’s – Gravitational Arch of 10. A tune which used to absolutely melt my mind on the dance floor back in the early 90s. Laurent Garnier has described it as the perfect Trance track and who am I to argue.

As with most Down Low Sessions, I’ve slotted in a few D&B artists takes on the lower BPMs and this one sees Sub Focus, Goldie, Photek and Joy Orbison all contribute 130bpm masterpieces to the vibe.

If you like pure electronic music I’m pretty confident you’ll love this, so enjoy.

Been an absolute age since I’ve dropped a Down Low Session and I am super excited about this one. A collaboration between William C. and myself, the selection duties fell to William. I then programmed the tunes into a workable order and let the music mix itself.

Flying by the seat of my pants, I didn’t want to listen to any of these tracks in their entirety. Instead, I just did some simple track marking and then dealt with any surprises as they came along. The result is a Deep House / Techno set William described as ‘Funny, witty, funkily playful – just full of emotion and brimming with happiness.’

I’ll take that. 🙂

I don’t exactly know what category these tunes fall into other than amazing. They sound a little like house, but there are broken beats in there, and all I do know is that this is my favourite Down Low Session in quite some time.

Tunes to keep an ear out for are Sepalcure’s amazing Warning, which I’m putting up as the best way to start a set I’ve heard all year. Then there’s Stanton Warriors & Tony Quattro – Get Low (Infrakt Remix) which is pure breakbeat funk and has a vocal hook that gets stuck in your head for day. You have been warned. Last, but by no means least, is Calibre’s – Grow which is my favourite house track of the year by miles and also the name of Calibre’s new LP. If you haven’t heard it, get on it.
