Last year I did a mix of old 96 chilled jazzy tracks called The Finest. I guess you could call this a sequel of sorts. There are a few well know tracks amongst this lot, but by in large I’ve tried to pick some of the more obscure tracks from the golden era of D&B.

I’m sending this one out to Haste, Blick and Niddle (Nidal) who never cease to amaze me with their knowledge of old D&B and who’s mixes are always welcome on my iPod any time. Respect fellahs.

Closing out the over view of 31 Records this mix goes to show what a varied scope of sounds Doc Scott has covered since the days of the Rollers EPs. The later releases cover all sorts from Liquid, Dub, Tech, Hard, Atmospheric through to Minimal.

Whilst 31 Records has never had the pulling power of Moving Shadow or Metalheadz there can be no doubt that Scotties label has done a huge amount in shaping the sound of D&B. If you want to hear where Doc Scott thinks D&B is going in the future you could do a lot worse than checking out his Soundcloud Page where the man himself puts up all his mixes.

Massive respect to 31 Records and the Doc Scott for the years of truly original and ground breaking music.

One last mix to see the year out. 2009 has been a great year for D&B. New sounds and boundaries are being forged and despite the constant baying of the haters and the ‘it used to be better’ brigade the music is stronger than ever.

This mix covers a lot of ground from deep, drumfunk, liquid, minimal, tech and more. A big shout to Consequence who’s new LP ‘Live for Never’ has flipped my lid with it’s depth and beauty. Also props to The Upbeats, Audio, SPL, Seba and esspecially The Square for the free tracks.

The Ear & Drum officially turns one today. 🙂

And to celebrate I’ve broken out of my D&B shackles and put together a mash up of almost everything but. I spent a long time getting this one right, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.

Expect a few more mash up mixes in the new year as I am making a resolution to expand the Ear & Drum’s musical horizons in 2010. Also I am going to ramp up the news, reviews and free track give aways in an effort to keep the blog fresh and interesting.

Liquid seems to be on the move at the moment. Whilst some camps are still pushing the dance floor sound, others are bringing a deeper influence. Russia seems to be a gold mine for new talent, and an amazing amount of melodic and minimal music has surfaced this year from the eastern block. The sound still holds it’s melodic base, but strips back the beats and lets the sub-bass pulse.

This mix is essentially the a best of all the new liquid(esc) music I’ve bought in the last couple of months. There are some traditional hand clap numbers in there, but I mainly try and focus of the deeper side of the sound.

Stripped Bare – Ear & Drum Session 21

The deep minimalistic sound running through Drum & Bass has been around forever. But this year it seems to have come of age with some seriously big names now playing almost entirely minimal. At it’s best the sound rolls out deep, dark and dubby with a little nod to the good old days of Tech Step. And at it worst it can sound like a half made Drum & Bass track.

With cavernous b-lines intermingling with skippy high end beats as atmospheric pads float in and out of your ears. Artists like Alix Perez, Rockwell, S.P.Y. and Morphy are taking the sound into some seriously deep territory and in the process redefining what people consider Drum & Bass.

This set goes out to Doc Scott for always being there on the edge and peering over the line and D-Bridge for the Autonomic podcasts and pushing things to their limits.

Another 31 Recordings mix, this time focussing on the Kingz of the Rollers EP series. Spanning from 2003-2004 the Kingz of the Rollers were THE EP series that you had to have. The mix of established and new artists kept the EPs varied and saw 31 Records tap into artists like Klute, D.Kay, Greg Packer and Pendulum for the first time.

By 2003 the 31 sound had evolved into mighty rollers that suited both the light and dark vibes. Old classics like NHS, How You Make Me Feel, Deadline and even Shadow Boxing got updated remixes using the new sound. It’s hard to keep still to these tunes. They are just that infectious that you can’t help but bob your head.

A new mix this time based on the uplifting vibes of Summer. I know it has headed into Autumn in the Northern hemisphere, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to mix up a little reminder of what made the festival floors burn.

Hospital were obviously a HUGE part of Summer with Sick Music and Logistics new LP Crash, Bang, Wallop! hitting hard and heavy. But it seemed like everyone caught a dose of the fever with producers like Fresh and Jonny L also wading in with their take on the Summer warehouse sound. And of course regulars like Lenzman, Greenfly and Young Ax produced their normal high quality crowd pleasing choons.

If things are getting a little parky around your way, and you want to feel the sun one last time before Winter kicks in I suggest you get this on your iPod and take it for a spin. 😉

I’ve been a little out of the game recently due to life getting in the way of music. So this mix is an attempt to catch up on the last couple of months in Drum & Bass.

June, July and August has seen some of the best tunes of the year coming out, plus some huge albums as well. Sick Music on Hospital, Memoirs of an Afterlife on Metalheadz and Ambassadors 4 on Santorin are all incredibly strong releases. Add to this the slew of quality 12″ releases and I had plenty to keep me to spinning for a couple of hours.

I’ve tried to get in a good variety of styles, and take it on a bit of a ride. So whether your are having Summer in the North or Winter in South, this should be a good sound track for the season.
