New Year’s Break – Ear & Drum Session 24

One last mix to see the year out. 2009 has been a great year for D&B. New sounds and boundaries are being forged and despite the constant baying of the haters and the ‘it used to be better’ brigade the music is stronger than ever.

This mix covers a lot of ground from deep, drumfunk, liquid, minimal, tech and more. A big shout to Consequence who’s new LP ‘Live for Never’ has flipped my lid with it’s depth and beauty. Also props to The Upbeats, Audio, SPL, Seba and esspecially The Square for the free tracks.

If you are stuck for something to listen to on or in the New Year then get on it. Happy New Year to everyone who has supported me in 2009 and here’s hoping 2010 is bigger and better for you all.

Stripped Bare – Ear & Drum Session 21

The deep minimalistic sound running through Drum & Bass has been around forever. But this year it seems to have come of age with some seriously big names now playing almost entirely minimal. At it’s best the sound rolls out deep, dark and dubby with a little nod to the good old days of Tech Step. And at it worst it can sound like a half made Drum & Bass track.

With cavernous b-lines intermingling with skippy high end beats as atmospheric pads float in and out of your ears. Artists like Alix Perez, Rockwell, S.P.Y. and Morphy are taking the sound into some seriously deep territory and in the process redefining what people consider Drum & Bass.

This set goes out to Doc Scott for always being there on the edge and peering over the line and D-Bridge for the Autonomic podcasts and pushing things to their limits.

Step Tech – Jungletrain Session 136

Djork wanted me to put this old jungletrain set back up for the people. I couldn’t find it amongst my archives so big ups to Eric Digital who was able to point me towards a link from a German site that had a copy still up for download.

Deep, dark and brooding. That is the only way you can describe the Tech Step sound from 96-97. If you wanna know why Ed Rush and Trace are considered the legends they are today you gottah check out this set of pure 1996 Tech Step beats and bass. With support from Tonic AKA The Mac, Skyscraper and Dillinja this set goes to prove that tech step can be both beautiful & brutal all at the same time.

Fricken Genius – Jungletrain Session 127

Once upon a time a long time ago, producers didn’t just write choons that made you jump up and down. They also made tracks that took you on a journey, made your jaw drop and shit the bed all at once.

That’s Not Drum & Bass – Jungletrain Session 91

I played this set a few years back as a radio broadcast and had a few people quiz me as to whether this was ‘really’ drum & bass or not. I was surprised at the time because I’d always considered this stuff drum & bass. I’d never really thought too much about where the boundaries blur between half beat, ambient works and abstract drum & bass.

So, just a heads up this isn’t your typical drum & bass set. However, that’s no bad thing when it comes to keeping the music challenging and interesting. If you like standard boom tick boom tick drum & bass then I definitely recommend you have a listen to this just for a refreshing change…

…who knows you might even like it. 😉

Half Beaten – Phuturefreq Session 13

HELP!

I did this mix a looong time ago back in Jan 2005 and have since lost the track listing. It is a boomer and I listen to it fairly regularly, but I need your help to fill in the blanks in my in-complete tracklist.

It is mainly half-beat and dub paced electronica and I suspect a lot of the missing track are from Ninja Tunes. Stupidly, I do own all the tracks in this mix, but they are lost in my shelves and some of them are so tasty I have to know what they are called so I can resurrect them for future mixes.

If anyone can help then just post up a comment here and I’ll fill in the blanks as track information comes to hand. Thanks in advance.

In Too Deep – Ear & Drum Session 13

I did a mix years ago now called ‘Deep Seated’. It had all my favourite deep steppers on it all in one mix. I went to listen to it again recently only to find that that by some tragic accident it had never been backed up to DVD. Luckily I still had a full set list, so instead of letting it get me down I decided to remix the set and make some new additions to it. 🙂 The end result is ‘In Too Deep’.

I find this deep steppy sound usually sorts out the part time D&B listeners from the true heads, as it doesn’t rely on any fancy production techniques and tricks, or on a relentless firing Amen to keep you interested. Instead it sets up an almost hypnotic beat and just rolls out into a deep panorama of sound that locks you in. It takes some true production talent to pull this off and not sound boring and repetitive, so you know some serious amounts of talent and work have gone into making these tunes work.

This mix is comes in three parts with two half beat interludes provided by the genius of Russia’s Coldicus between each section. First up are all my favourite old deep steppers from labels like 31 Records and Creative Source. Minimal, stripped bare melody tracks that take you on a proper journey. Next up is the modern day legacy of this deep D&B provided by Commix and D-Bridge. And the third section is the harder & darker edge of the deep step sound. Atom One’s pioneering Trance and Bass stepper Imminent is massive and Doc Scott’s – Shadow Boxing puts the class in D&B classic.

ChaNinja was chasing this request, so this one is going out to him. Cha if you are reading this, I am slowly getting through the others you requested. You’ve even caused me to re-catalogue my entire mix collection.

Earthlings – Jungletrain Session 199

Earth Records was Bukem’s off shoot label for rare-groove based music. Although a lot of the compilations that came out under the Earth banner didn’t have a lot of D&B on them, the D&B tracks they did have were amazing and sublime.

Bukem’s own Constellations with DRS on vocals sets the tone for the mix, but big back-in-the-day artists like Blame, Crystal, Addiction, Phunky Technicians & Doc Scott all make this a listening pleasure.

Don’t just stand there, chill out.
